Graduation is a huge milestone, and your photos should feel just as meaningful. One of the biggest decisions when planning your session is where to take your graduation photos, there are endless options!. The right location can completely change the vibe of your images, and can range from classic and academic to vibrant and city inspired.
But good news!! If you're graduating in or around Lancaster Pennsylvania, you have tons of great options right where you are. Lancaster is historically rich, a perfect mix of urban/modern with beautiful parks.
Below are some of my favorite graduation photo locations around Lancaster, plus tips for choosing the one that fits your style!!
Lancaster City
If you love a classic city vibe, downtown Lancaster is a Great choice (it's where I had my high school graduation photos done!)
Some things you’ll find in lancaster city include:
beautiful brick buildings
colorful murals
Rooftop parking garages
Open town square with lots of natural light!
This type of location is perfect if you want photos that feel modern and full of personality. this is best for grads who are more trendy, have outfit changes (the city is very versatile, causal and dressy work well here!), and seniors who are looking for lifestyle / candid senior photography.
Maddie's tip: Early morning or weekday evenings in the city work best to avoid crowds!
Long's Park
If you’re dreaming of soft, natural portraits, Long’s Park is one of the best locations in the area.
Some things you'll find:
large, open green spaces
a beautiful lake and fountain
walking paths and bridges
gorgeous golden-hour lighting
It’s especially stunning in late spring and early fall, which happens to line up perfectly with graduation season. This is best for seniors who want a more relaxed feel, with flowing outfits and soft lighting. Calm, relaxed, and cool!
Franklin & Marshall College
For graduates of Franklin & Marshall, photographing on campus adds an extra layer of meaning.
The campus features:
beautiful collegiate buildings
walkways Lined with trees
academic buildings that give a historic feel
classic quad-style lawns
These locations create timeless graduation portraits, and are best for of course, F&M grads, but this location is also great for seniors who want a classic college feel. think pictures with your gap and gown.
Susquehannock State Park
If you want something dramatic and scenic, Susquehannock State Park might be the right choice for you!!
The overlooks provide:
views of the Susquehanna River
cliffs and high overlooks
sunsets during golden hour!
Hiking trails and nature surrounded backgrounds
This spot is amazing for grads who want their photos to look like they're straight out of a movie scene. plan for a bit of walking if this is a location you choose!
How to Choose the Right Location for Your Graduation Photos
Here are a few things I always recommend thinking about before picking your spot.
1. Think About the Vibe You Want
Ask yourself what style feels most like you:
City & trendy >>> downtown Lancaster
Natural & relaxed >>> Long’s Park
Classic & academic >>> campus locations
Epic & scenic >>> Susquehannock State Park
Your location helps tell the story of your graduation.
2. Outfit Choices!!
Your outfit should work with the environment.
flowy dresses >>> parks or nature settings
modern outfits >>> urban locations
cap & gown >>> campus
The goal is for you to stand out while still fitting the scene. Check out my other blogs if you're not sure where to start with what to wear!
3. Think About Time of Day!!
Lighting makes a huge difference in photos. The best sessions usually happen 1 hour before sunset (golden hour) or early morning for quieter city locations. This creates softer light and much more flattering photos.
In order to grab the time that you want, try to book at least 1-2 months ahead!
4. Pick Somewhere Meaningful
Some ideas:
your college campus
a favorite study spot
a park where you spent time with friends
a place that represents your major or hobbies
Your graduation photos should celebrate not just the degree you earned, but the journey that got you there. Choosing a location that reflects your personality, memories, and style will make your photos feel even more special years from now.
If you're planning graduation photos in Lancaster and aren't sure which location would work best, I would love to help guide you toward spots that match your style, lighting conditions, and the overall vibe you want for your session!
